On 3rd November, Take Note had the pleasure of taking part in Selina’s surprise birthday celebration aboard a party boat in the Solent.
It was an early start for the band as we had to have everything set up for when the guests arrived.
Originally thinking ourselves to have quite strong stomachs, we became slightly anxious that the rocking of the boat had caused some of us to become rather queasy. However, this didn’t deter us from giving this party the good old TN energy!
The last passenger aboard was the birthday girl herself who was incredibly surprised and a little embarrassed at the huge 80-person party who had amassed for her.
We soon set sail out into the Southampton Solent. Once the guests were settled with drinks, we all looked out over the water to watch the annual fireworks display in Mayflower Park which really set the mood for the evening. It was a privilege to be able to watch the beautiful colours spread out over the glistening water on a warm boat rather than shivering in a crowded park.
As the last bang of the fireworks died away, the party was now in full strength and TN chose this perfect moment to erupt into Robbie Williams’ Let Me Entertain You. The sea breeze blowing from the back of the boat gave us fresh energy and kept us on our feet throughout the night. It did cause a few issues with the ladies’ hair though!
As the candles were lit after the first set, Bex blasted out a triumphant ‘Happy Birthday’ on her trumpet and the guests enjoyed a delicious slice of birthday cake.
The second set had an exceptional atmosphere that even TN rarely experience. This only grew as the boat hit a rocky patch and the band played through it like nothing could sway them. The Sweet Child O’ Mine guitar solo is infamous for any musician but even Slash would have been impressed with Mat’s resilience to the rocking sea waves.
As we blasted out our final song Oh What a Night, riding on the waves of party vibes, a conga line formed which took up the entire floor of the ship. In the function band world, you always know you’ve given a good party if there’s a conga line!
Screaming for one more song, we exhausted the guests’ dance moves with a final energetic Livin’ On A Prayer. As the last note faded, even the sea breeze couldn’t stop the beads of sweat lingering on our foreheads and we knew we’d played our all!
Once the guests had disembarked, we still had too much adrenaline to go home. So, we decided to frequent our local McDonald’s for a late-night snacking session. Armed with nuggets and chips, we were very satisfied with the results of our most recent gig.
From the photos and praise we received, TN are very glad Daisy and Selina had a great night.
“What an amazing night, you guys were absolutely brilliant! Great song choices, massive effort to keep the energy up in the first set, brass section compliments the band so well, just loved you guys! Had some wonderful feedback from all the guests as well who were so impressed with you.” – Daisy R
